What to do

Visitors of all ages find a range of things to do at MKWE to keep them as busy as they want to be during their visit. Relax at the clubhouse around the pool and take in the views of Mount Kenya. Bring a book and your iPad and relax. See how many of the 125 different types of birdlife at MKWE, or spot some of the resident mammals. Or taking the pace up a notch, hire bikes and cycle around MKWE, or walk or jog on the 6km trail. Or pack a cool box and head into Ol Pejeta Conservancy for a range of activities from a game drive at your own pace to lion tracking with the Ol Pejeta rangers.

Whatever you choose to do your visit to Mount Kenya Wildlife Estate will be one to remember.

Game drive

The only way to really appreciate Ol Pejeta Conservancy is to jump into your car and experience it for yourself. See if you can come up with new words to express the scale and beauty of Ol Pejeta’s 110,000-acres of pure wild. Explore either by yourselves or with one of Ol Pejeta’s experienced guides who will share their expert knowledge with you. Ol Pejeta is East Africa’sAfrica’s largest black rhino sanctuary and therefore gives visitors the best chance to see the Big Five in one day. Whatever wildlife you do, or don’t see, the spectacular views and the diverse landscape are unforgettable.

Please note that you have to pay entry fees into Ol Pejeta, just like any regular visitors. All of the following activities need to be booked and paid for in advance.

Lion tracking

Did you know that you can tell how old a lion is by the colour of its nose? Learn more fascinating facts when you go lion tracking on Ol Pejeta. These big cats are under threat all over Africa, and you can help save them by gathering information for Ol Pejeta’s ecological monitoring department. Several Ol Pejeta lions have been fitted with radio collars, and you can join a specialised lion ranger as he finds and records data on individuals. Get close enough to count the whiskers!

Night game drive

This opportunity is not available in most wildlife conservancies, so wrap up warm and let that intrepid explorer inside you loose! With the help of a spotlight and an expert Ol Pejeta guide, you stand the chance of spotting some of Kenya’s more unusual critters – aardvark; porcupine; bat-eared foxes; hyena; leopard; lion are just some of the wonderful wild animals you might encounter before you return to your luxury accommodations on MKWE. Find out which of Ol Pejeta’s nocturnal animals is considered to be the smelliest mammal on the planet!

Bushwalk

Few things will awaken your animal instinct like following the fresh tracks of an elephant through the African bush on foot. Touch, smell, see and hear nature as you explore Ol Pejeta with an experienced armed ranger. Learn to identify different animal tracks and spoor as your ranger shares his expert knowledge of the birds, insects, mammals, and plants of the area.

Bird walk

Twitchers rejoice! The Ol Pejeta bird walk is the best way to see Laikipia’s fantastic bird life. From the massive 140kg ostrich to the endangered white-backed vulture, the majestic martial eagle, the cinnamon-chested bee-eater, and everything in between. Download the bird list and dust off your binoculars.

Endangered Species Boma

The world’s last remaining two northern white rhinos live in the 700-acre Endangered Species Boma on Ol Pejeta. Don’tDon’t miss this rare opportunity to meet these gentle giants and hear their incredible story from the keepers that look after them 24/7. All proceeds from the Endangered Species Boma are reinvested into the continuing efforts to pull the species back from the verge of extinction.

Available twice daily from the Morani Information Centre at 08:30 and 16:00.

Dog tracking

Ever tried to outrun a sniffer dog? Pay a visit to Ol Pejeta’s dog unit and learn about what it takes to run one of the best anti-poaching K-9 teams in the country.

Put the bloodhounds to the test yourself: hide within the confines of the Morani Information Center area and see if these highly trained dogs can seek you out! Not only is this great fun for you, but also helps to keep the skills of the dogs in sharp shape.

Behind the scenes with the chimpanzees

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary takes in orphaned, abandoned and confiscated chimpanzees from all over the world. Here they have the opportunity to live out the rest of their days in peace, with a dedicated team of keepers. The behind-the-scenes tour is an excellent opportunity to see what it takes to look after these fascinating chimpanzees. Get exclusive access during their feeding time and watch the chimps as they engage in enrichment activities within their enclosures.

Morani’s Restaurant

Morani’s was recently named one of the top 20 amazing places to eat in Kenya – and it’s not hard to see why. Conveniently located at the Information Centre, it’s the perfect halfway stop during an adventure-packed day of safari and activities on Ol Pejeta.

Enjoy a famous Morani burger – made from Ol Pejeta beef, topped with cheese and bacon with a side of homemade fries. Or for a light lunch opt for a crisp, healthy salad or a wrap to eat on the go. Kids are catered for too. There a small shop at the restaurant with some great souvenirs and curios made by local craftspeople and exclusive Ol Pejeta merchandise.
